Hilton Head Island’s Andrew Orischak and Nick Russell are among the last eight golfers standing at the Carolinas Golf Association’s 46th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.
Orischak and Russell each breezed through their opening matches but needed extra holes to finish off their opponents in the second round Friday at Furman University Golf Club in Greenville.
Orischak earned the No. 1 seed by shooting 8-under par to earn medalist honors during the 36-hole stroke play qualifying. He defeated Jarrett Grimes 4-and-3 before needing 19 holes to dispatch McClure Thompson in the second round. He will face No. 9 seed Zachary Bishop of Travelers Rest in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Russell is the No. 10 seed and won 7-and-5 over Kobie Morton in the first round before going 20 holes in a win over Stan Sill, who was trying for his second top-10 upset of the day. Russell will take on No. 2 seed Logan Sowell at 8:16 a.m. Saturday.
Bluffton’s Riley Schank (No. 4 seed) lost his opening match 1-up to Kyle Scruggs, and Bluffton’s Brandon Neals (No. 24) lost 4-and-2 to Bishop.
