May River’s breakthrough season came to a close with a 2-0 loss at Gilbert in the Class 3A district finals Monday.
Josh Patterson and Jeffrey Hodge each went 2-for-3 and Jack Hegan had a double for the Sharks.
Gilbert’s Preston Price and Ryan Ouzts combined on the shutout. Price allowed six hits and three walks over six innings, and Ouzts struck out the side in a perfect seventh to nail down the save.
Patterson took the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs and five hits over six innings with seven strikeouts.
The Sharks finished 20-6 in their second season of existence and claimed their first Region 8-3A title.
