May River reduced its magic number to clinch the Region 8-3A title to one game with a 5-4 comeback win at Wade Hampton on Monday.
Wade Hampton’s Matt Poston hit a three-run homer in the first inning, but Josh Patterson shut out the Red Devils for the next four innings and the Sharks chipped away at the deficit.
Jeffrey Hodge hit an RBI double and Jack Hegan added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, and Cooper George and Hodge hit homers in the fifth to put the Sharks on top. Logan Wake added an RBI single in the sixth.
The Red Devils pushed across a run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth, but George came on to put out the fire with an inning-ending strikeout and stranded two runners in the seventh to nail down the save.
Kamryn Gleason was 3-for-3 and scored a run, and Patterson struck out nine over five innings to earn the win.
The Sharks (16-3, 9-1) can clinch the region title with one win in the final two games of the series. Game 2 is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at May River.
