Joel Fleek scored the only goal of the night to give May River boys’ soccer a 1-0 win over rival Bluffton on Friday.
The highly-anticipated matchup of two of the top teams in Class 3A was deadlocked until midway through the second half, when Conner Golden’s assist set up Fleek to give the second-ranked Sharks the lead.
May River’s defense took care of the rest, and Tony Rodriguez made five saves to preserve the shutout of the fifth-ranked Bobcats.
“I’m very proud of how the boys came out tonight, controlling the game and attacking early and often,” May River coach Misael Garzon said. “Our defense did an excellent job containing their attack and limiting their shots on frame.
“Little brother isn’t doing too bad after all.”
The Sharks (11-1, 2-0) travel to Battery Creek for a region game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Bobcats (5-2-1, 1-1) have a region match at Wade Hampton on Tuesday.
