May River softball battled back from an early deficit but fell short in a 5-3 loss to visiting Byrnes on Wednesday.
The Rebels scored in each of the first three innings to open a 4-0 lead and went up 5-0 in the fifth before the Sharks rallied to get back in the game.
Kylee Gleason and Hayley Welsch each had two hits and scored a run for the Sharks, and Olivia Turpin hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Welsch struck out four and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks in a complete game.
The Sharks (1-1) host the Rebels again at 6 p.m. Friday.
