Thomas Heyward baseball outlasted rival John Paul II for a 1-0 win in nine innings in both teams’ season openers Monday night.
Louie Smith had two hits, including the game-winning single in the ninth, for the Rebels, and Peyton Bennett was 2-for-3.
Zack Bond struck out six over four hitless innings, Devin Scott struck out five over four frames, and Roman Padgett pitched the ninth to finish off the two-hitter and earn the win.
Adrian Skipper matched zeroes with the Rebels for 6 2/3 innings and Brad Tigges kept THA off the board until Smith’s game-winning hit in the ninth.
The Rebels (1-0) play at Colleton Prep on Thursday. The Golden Warriors (0-1) play at Colleton Prep at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
