HSBB: Thompson’s Game-Winner Lifts JPII Girls Over BA

Ayannah Thompson’s steal and layup with six seconds left lifted John Paul II’s girls to a 47-45 overtime win over visiting Beaufort Academy on Monday.

Tkai DeVore scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Golden Warriors (17-4, 6-1) to the win that moved them ahead of the Eagles for second place in the region standings.

Kendall Duncan scored 15 points, Karolina Struharova added 14, and Emily Ann Hiers and Amelia Huebel contributed eight apiece for the Eagles, who made eight 3-pointers and led for most of the game.

The Eagles used a 9-0 run to open a six-point lead with less than six minutes remaining, but DeVore’s 3-point play capped a rally that pulled JPII even. Thompson had a chance to win it in regulation after coming up with a steal and drawing a foul with 6.8 seconds left, but she missed both free throws to force overtime.

BA (11-5, 6-2) scored the first four points of the extra period, but DeVore again pulled the Golden Warriors even with a steal and layup with 1:32 left and Thompson made the big play down the stretch and snap the Eagles six-game winning streak.

The teams meet again Wednesday at Beaufort Academy.
