John Paul II’s boys overcame an early challenge from visiting Hilton Head Christian Academy to claim a 67-46 victory Friday.
Amere Cherry scored 18 points and Rashad Battiste added 16 to lead the Golden Warriors, who trailed 12-5 early before turning up the defensive intensity in the second quarter to take control.
“I thought our size and depth wore them down a little bit,” JPII coach Stacy Benedik said. “You have to give (HHCA) Coach (Mac) Tamminen so much credit for the job he has done with those guys. They had a great game plan.”
Malone Huisinger added eight points and Sam Summa had seven for JPII.
Both teams continue region play Tuesday, as JPII (5-8, 2-1) travels to Thomas Heyward and HHCA (2-10, 1-2) plays at Hilton Head Prep.
