Whale Branch’s playoff run ended with a 42-21 loss to visiting Batesburg-Leesville on Friday in the second round of the SCHSL Class 2A playoffs.
Irvin Mulligan rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors, but the Panthers’ pulled away in the second half.
Batesburg-Leesville scored on its first two possessions for a 14-0 lead before Mulligan busted a 71-yard TD run to cut the margin in half. The Panthers extended the lead with a passing touchdown, but Mulligan finished off a drive with a 1-yard plunge to pull Whale Branch within 20-14 at halftime, and the Warriors had the ball first to start the second half.
The Panthers came up with a defensive stop, though, and followed that with three straight touchdown drives to extend the advantage to 42-14 before C.J. Brown’s late touchdown pass made it 42-21.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Warriors, who finish the season with a 6-5 mark.
