Clifford Steps Down At Beaufort High

Longtime coach Mark Clifford has stepped down from his position as head football coach at Beaufort High School.

“I hung it up,” Clifford said Tuesday. “I brought them out of the cellar, got them winning and going places. It’s time for someone else to take over.”

Clifford took over a foundering program at Beaufort in 2004 and immediately turned things around, going 13-1 in his first campaign and reaching the Lower State final.

Clifford finishes his tenure with the Eagles with a 109-59 in 14 seasons, including 10 trips to the playoffs. The Eagles reached the Class 4A state championship game in 2007.
Clifford said he will remain at Beaufort High through the end of the school year and aid in the transition to a new coach, but he isn’t sure his coaching career is over.

“I have time,” Clifford said. “I’m going to answer some phone calls and see what happens.”
