Freshman quarterback Sam Summa threw a touchdown pass and completed passes to convert two critical two-point conversions in overtime as John Paul II ended the regular season with a 28-26 double-overtime win over Colleton Prep on Friday.
Summa tossed a 38-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Amere Cherry to give the Golden Warriors an early 12-0 lead. The Warhawks came back to tie it 12 before halftime, and both defenses pitched shutouts in the second half.
Zack Doe threw a touchdown pass to Travis Taylor on a trick play in the first overtime, and Summa hit Nyleem Wright for the conversion and a 20-12 lead. The Warhawks answered to tie it at 20 and force the second overtime period and scored first in the second overtime, but JPII stopped the conversion try.
Doe tied it with a 12-yard touchdown run – his second TD run of the night – and Summa hit Reco Anderson for the winning 2-point conversion.
JPII (6-4, 2-2) now awaits its playoff seed.
