Hilton Head Island High School suffered its third straight heartbreaking loss, giving up a touchdown with nine seconds remaining to lose 41-35 to visiting Colleton County on Friday.
Collin Kaiser threw four touchdown passes – including a go-ahead strike to Diante Richard with 55 seconds left – but a big kickoff return set up Craig Grant’s touchdown pass to Trakell Murray to lift the Cougars to a critical Region 8-4A win.
Grant threw two TD passes and ran for two more scores, helping Colleton County rally from a 21-7 deficit late in the second quarter.
Kaiser threw TD passes to Richard, Landon Jenkins, and Kevin Schofield to stake HHIHS to a 21-7 lead with 4:17 left in the half, but Grant ran for a touchdown and hit Shykem Chisolm for a score to pull the Cougars within 21-20 at halftime.
Richard’s 15-yard touchdown run made it 28-20, but Grant’s second rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion pulled the Cougars even, and Tyrese Pressey’s 4-yard TD run gave Colleton County the lead before the drama in the final minute.
The Seahawks (3-4, 0-3) travel to Stall next week and will have to win their final two games and get some help to reach the playoffs.
