Irvin Mulligan scored two rushing touchdowns – including one in overtime – and Jordan Reeves had a punt return score and an interception to help Whale Branch to a 20-14 overtime victory over defending Region 6-2A champion Woodland.
Reeves opened the scoring with a 75-yard punt return score, and Mulligan scored on a 20-yard run for a 14-7 Whale Branch lead at halftime.
The Wolverines tied it in the third quarter and that’s where it remained despite Reeves’ interception setting up a potential game-winning field goal try at the end of regulation.
Kyshon Hipp’s sack and Jaheem Hazel’s interception kept the Wolverines off the board in the overtime period, and Mulligan scored on a run around the right side to give the Warriors a huge region win.
Whale Branch (1-4, 1-0) plays another big region contest next week, hosting North Charleston.
