May River High School went toe-to-toe with the No. 5 team in Class 3A, losing 28-27 at Manning.
Ahmad Green threw two touchdown passes – including a 97-yard TD to fellow freshman Melvin Livermon – and rushed for a score for the Sharks. Cam Adams added a touchdown run and Hunter Singletary caught a touchdown pass.
The Sharks trailed 14-0 early but took a 27-21 lead on Green’s touchdown run in the third quarter before the Monarchs regained the lead late in the quarter and shut out May River in the fourth.
The Sharks (1-4) travel across town to face rival Bluffton in a Region 8-3A matchup next week. The Bobcats held on for a 24-16 win at May River on Aug. 25.
