Beaufort weightlifting star C.J. Cummings swept the gold medals in a dominant performance Saturday at the Nike American Open Series 3 event in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The 17-year-old won gold in all three categories of the 69kg weight class in the men’s open division with marks of 135kg in the snatch and 180kg in the clean & jerk for a 315kg total.
Jordan Wissinger was second in all three categories but did not approach Cummings’ lifts, finishing with 122kg in the snatch, 145kg in the clean, and a 267kg total.
Cummings attempted American record lifts of 141kg in the snatch and 186kg in the clean & jerk but came up short.
Cummings’ next scheduled event is the 2017 IWF World Championships in Anaheim, Calif., from Nov. 28-Dec. 5.
