Battery Creek High School has named former Winthrop University star and minor-leaguer Jason Colson as its head baseball coach, the school announced via Twitter.
Colson starred at Winthrop from 1998-01, leading the Eagles to two Big South Conference titles and two NCAA regional appearances. He was the 2001 Big South Conference Athlete of the Year and was inducted to the Big South Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Winthrop Hall of Fame in 2013.
Colson was drafted in the seventh round of the 2001 MLB draft following his senior season at Winthrop and pitched in the Toronto Blue Jays organization for three years before a shoulder injury ended his pitching career. He played first base in various independent leagues from 2005-09.
