HSBSB: Silver Foxes hold Sharks hitless in tourney opener

A young May River team ran into a buzzsaw in its season opener Thursday at the Gilbert Sandlapper Shootout, as Dutch Fork’s Hunter Phipps and George Schodowski combined to no-hit the Sharks in a 10-0 game that ended after five innings.

Phipps struck out three and issued two walks over four innings, and Schodowski struck out two while sitting the Sharks down in order in the fifth.

James Layman and Davis Rose were the only baserunners for the Sharks, drawing two-out walks in the second and third.

The Silver Foxes dinged Newberry commit Bennett Roemer for six runs (four earned) on four hits over two innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

Qwinton Bennett was 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer, and five RBIs for the Silver Foxes.

May River (0-1) continues tournament play against Carolina Forest on Friday and Chapin on Saturday.
