HS BLAX: Van Esselstyn’s ‘snowman’ highlights Sharks’ opening win

After watching film of May River boys lacrosse scrimmaging against Dutch Fork last week, Blythewood went into Monday’s season opener against the Sharks determined to lock down Andrew Dromsky. What the Bengals didn’t now, is that Brooks Van Esselstyn was still with the basketball team.

It’s lacrosse season now, and Van Esselstyn started his junior year with a bang, recording a “snowman” with eight goals while adding three assists in a 15-10 road win over a quality Class 5A opponent.

The Sharks blitzed the Bengals out of the gate, scoring six goals in the first quarter to build a three-goal cushion, and adding to the margin to go into halftime leading 10-6. Blythewood shut out May River’s attack in the third period and closed within two goals, but the Sharks exploded for five unanswered goals in the fourth to close it out.

Whit Beebe added four goals and an assist for May River, and Dromsky did his part with a goal, three assists, and six groundballs while drawing attention away from Van Esselstyn. Jacob Bollinger had eight groundballs and three takeaways, and Alex Dunton added eight groundballs and went 11-for-18 on the faceoff dot for the Sharks.

Corbin Wiltse saved 16 of 26 shots on goal to earn the win in net for May River (1-0), which travels to Richmond Hill on Thursday.
