HSBBB: Rebels can’t dig out of early hole at Calhoun

Thomas Heyward boys basketball couldn’t overcome early foul trouble for two of its stars, playing catch-up all night in a 63-55 loss to Calhoun Academy on the Cavaliers’ home floor in St. Matthews.

With Brandon Howard and Tony O’Banner saddled with early fouls, the Cavs opened up a four-point lead after a quarter and maintained it to go into the break up 32-28.

The Rebels kept it close through the third, trailing by five with eight minutes to play, but Calhoun’s Kade Strickland and William Felder were too tough to stop. Strickland scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds, and Felder made 8-of-9 at the foul line to finish with 18 points and five assists.

Howard scored 14 in his THA finale, while fellow senior Preston Hamilton added 13, classmate Jordan Mikell had 11, and O’Banner contributed seven.

THA finishes the season with a 15-8 record, while Calhoun will face Spartanburg Christian on Tuesday.
