May River boys basketball improved its playoff seeding prospects with a crucial 63-60 road win at Lucy Beckham on Tuesday.
Chris Cash scored 14 points and James Layman added 13 to lead four Sharks in double digits as May River held on to split the season series and leapfrog Lucy Beckham for the No. 4 spot in the Region 7-4A standings.
It was a tight battle throughout, with the Bengals leading by one after a quarter and 31-29 at the break, as Garvin Douglas scored all 10 of his points in the first half to keep the Sharks in it. May River’s guards took over after halftime, as Cash scored 10 of his 14 after the break, and Layman and Gavin Blocker each added nine in the second half. Blocker finished with 12, including eight critical points in the fourth quarter.
Malin Allard scored 13 points, Rowan Irelan added 12, and Thomas Oppold had 11 for the Bengals.
May River (13-7, 6-5) wraps up the regular season at home against Beaufort High on Thursday.
