Thomas Heyward boys basketball showed its fourth-quarter toughness again Monday night, erasing a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 55-54 home win over Beaufort Academy.
After it was tied at 27 at halftime, BA took charge in the third quarter and opened up a 45-36 advantage going to the final eight minutes, but the Rebels clawed back within one with a minute left.
The teams exchanged baskets before eighth-grader Tony O’Banner took a feed from Brandon Howard and converted the layup to give THA the lead with 14 seconds left. BA’s Braydon Dineen had a look from 3-point range in the waning seconds, but it was off the mark and the Rebels secured the rebound.
Howard had a monster night with 18 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals, and O’Banner matched his 18 points and grabbed eight boards. Preston Hamilton added 10 points and seven rebounds for THA.
Dineen scored 19 points, Sully Gay added 12, and Zeke Gonzalez had 10 for BA, which suffered its first region loss to a SCISA 2A opponent.
“I’m a firm believer that we show our biggest growth during times of adversity,” BA coach Nick Field said. “I’m thankful Thomas Heyward gave us adversity tonight. Braydon Dineen continued his stellar play.”
THA (13-7, 7-5) travels to Holy Trinity on Tuesday, while BA (29-6, 8-2) travels to Hilton Head Prep for a tough matchup.
