Hilton Head Prep girls basketball gave a strong Northwood Academy squad all the challenge the Chargers could handle Friday, but visiting Northwood escaped with a 49-42 victory.

The Dolphins struggled to contain the Chargers’ size, speed, and athleticism, but they found ways to stay in the game by playing their signature stingy defense. HHP led 17-15 after one quarter, and it was tied at 26 at halftime.
Northwood opened a 37-34 advantage entering the fourth, but the Dolphins pulled even at 42 with 1:41 left. HHP’s late-game foul trouble came back to bite the Dolphins, though, as the Chargers went 9-for-15 from the foul line in the final frame to pull away.
Avery Brothers scored 13 points, and Katie Campbell and Emma Moore added seven each for the Dolphins. Alayah Birch scored 24 points to lead the Chargers (8-2), whose only losses have come to Class 4A North Augusta and undefeated SCISA 3A power Hammond.
HHP (5-3) faces Islands HS on Dec. 29 at Hilton Head Christian Academy.
