May River’s boys suffered their first loss of the season Friday night, falling 62-49 at Effingham County.

After trailing 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Sharks allowed just five points in the second while Garvin Douglas found his stroke on offense to give his team a 23-21 halftime lead. But Effingham County surged back ahead in the second half, going up 39-34 after the third frame before pulling away in the fourth.
Douglas led May River with 15 points, James Layman scored 13, and Gavin Blocker added 10. The Sharks couldn’t contain explosive Rebel senior Khiry Wallace, who paced all scorers with 22 points.
May River (3-1) faces the second of three straight Georgia opponents Saturday at home against Groves.
