John Paul II boys basketball held off a second-half comeback from visiting Memorial Day to claim a 51-50 victory in the Golden Warriors’ season opener Tuesday.

JPII held a comfortable 46-29 lead entering the fourth quarter before Memorial Day’s Chris Adam scored 12 consecutive points to get the Matadors back in the game. Adam finished with a game-high 24 points.
Senior forward Ian Wilson led JPII with 14 points and four rebounds, and senior guard Mark Knight added 12 points and six boards. Austin Floyd chipped in nine points and four assists for the Golden Warriors.
JPII (1-0) hosts the Coastal Hurricanes homeschool program at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
