A young Beaufort Academy team erased most of a 17-point halftime deficit but came up short against SCISA 1A power Cathedral Academy on Friday, falling 72-56 to the host team in the Battle of the Lowcountry to open the season.
The Eagles came out strong on defense, forcing three straight turnovers to start the game, but they couldn’t convert it into points. After withstanding the early blitz, the Generals opened up a 39-22 halftime lead, taking advantage of BA’s shaky ballhandling.
BA opened the second half with three takeaways, as well, and this time the Eagles turned them into layups, quickly slashing into the deficit. BA cut the lead to six before running into foul trouble, as Braydon Dineen went to the bench with four fouls and eventually fouled out, leaving the Eagles short-handed in the backcourt.
Timmy Horgan scored 14 points, including a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers, to lead BA, while Sully Gay added 13, and freshman Amarion Wilson contributed 11 off the bench.
“Not how I wanted to start, but I’m proud of the way the guys fought, especially in that third quarter,” said first-year BA head coach Nick Field.
The Eagles (0-1) will play Stall at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game.
