HSVB: Sharks open with two tough wins, Dolphins take down Wildcats

May River volleyball opened its season with a pair of impressive home wins Tuesday, taking down Hilton Head Prep in two sets and winning a tense, three-set match over Richmond Hill. 

The Sharks opened the evening with a thrilling 25-20, 13-25, 15-13 win over the Wildcats, getting 11 kills from Lillian Long to lead the way. Gabby Boegel dished out 21 assists, Brigit Hegan had five kills, and Corrie Velder picked up 14 digs for May River.

The Dolphins also won a three-set thriller against Richmond Hill, bouncing back after losing the first set to win 14-25, 25-12, 20-18 in an epic third set. Haley Majors had a team-high six kills for HHP, while Haylee Hopman added five kills and a team-best 10 digs, and Ashley Wilmot contributed five kills and seven digs. Ella Clark and Gabby Bettez each dished out 12 assists, Annie Braun had six aces, and Anna Scott had five kills for the Dolphins.

HHP wasn’t able to carry the momentum into the nightcap, though, as May River took control with a dominant first set and held off a challenge from the Dolphins in the second set to win 25-12, 25-22. Boegel spread her 20 assists around, as Jocelyn Roper had seven kills, and Long and Hegan added four each for the Sharks. Velder added three aces to go with a team-high nine digs. Hopman had a team-best six kills to go with five digs for HHP, while Wilmot added six digs and four kills, and Clark and Bettez each had eight assists.

The Sharks (2-0) are back in action Thursday in a tri-match at Hilton Head Christian Academy along with Savannah Christian. The Dolphins (3-1) play at John Paul II on Tuesday.
