Hilton Head Island’s Jonathan Griz shot 4-under-par 140 over 36 holes Monday to tie for medalist honors in U.S. Amateur Qualifying at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek, North Carolina, punching his ticket to the nation’s top amateur golf championship next month.
Griz followed up an opening round of 1-under 71 with a 3-under 69 in the second round to match Parker Gillam of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for medalist honors and claim one of three qualifying spots in the U.S. Amateur Championship from Aug. 9-15 at the famed Oakmont Country Club and Longue Vue Club in Pennsylvania.
The future University of Alabama golfer made five birdies in his opening round to offset a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey, and he continued the aggressive play in the afternoon session, firing six birdies against three bogeys to post the lowest score of the round.
The U.S. Amateur Championship begins with 36 holes of stroke play on Aug. 9-10 with the top 64 players advancing to the match play bracket. The 36-hole championship is scheduled for Aug. 15.
