GOLF: Sharks shine at national high school girls tourney

After cruising to a state title, May River’s girls golf team knew they could hang with anyone in the country. Now, they’ve proved it on the national stage.

Led by a stellar 240 from senior Sydney Bowes, the Sharks made a big splash in the NHSGA High School Golf Invitational at North Carolina’s storied Pinehurst Resort from Wednesday through Friday, finishing 14th in a strong 29-team field full of state champions.

Bowes began her week with an 85 on the treacherous Pinehurst No.6 track, but the SCHSL Class 4A runner-up responded Thursday with an impressive round of 78 at No. 9. The Berry College commit saved her best round for last at No.8, making three birdies on the front nine en route to a 77 and a tie for 48th overall. Her sister Kylie wasn’t far behind, recording a pair of 79s on the final two days to card a 246 and finish in a tie for 66th. Robbin Zetrouer shot a 258 highlighted by a solid second-round 84, Hannah Harris posted a 287, and Hailey Aipperspach finished with a 328.

Georgia’s Lambert High School took home the team title in a dominant 28-stroke victory, while Indiana native Chloe Johnson earned individual honors with a spectacular 1-under 215 to edge Mattison Frick by one shot.
