SWIM: Former Shark standout Nelson to compete in U.S. Olympic Trials

Another Lowco star will have a shot at Tokyo this summer.

May River High graduate and Bluffton FINS swimmer Erek Nelson will compete in the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in an attempt to qualify for this year’s Games.

Nelson earned the opportunity back in 2019 with a standout performance at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Greensboro, posting an outstanding time of 56.22 seconds in the 100m backstroke preliminaries to best the qualifying standard before capturing gold in the final with a mark of 56.33s.

After last year’s scheduled Games were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 21-year-old will get his chance starting Friday in Omaha, Nebraska. The top two swimmers in each event advance to the Wave II qualifying phase starting on June 13.
