May River softball ran into a buzzsaw in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs Saturday, falling 10-0 at North Augusta to begin the double-elimination district tournament.
The Sharks couldn’t generate any offense against Yellowjackets ace Katelyn Cochran, who struck out 14 and issued just one walk over five innings in a one-hit shutout.
Ruthie Roman had the only hit for the Sharks, a one-out single in the second, before Cochran retired 11 of the next 12 batters.
North Augusta scored a single run in the first and tacked on five in the third and four in the fourth to close it out early. Annabel Hurst was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Madi Usry belted a three-run homer in the fourth for the Yellowjackets.
May River (11-9) will host Region 7-4A rival James Island in an elimination game Monday.
