Colleton Prep’s defense suffered a rough outing in Game 1 of the SCISA 2A championship series, dropping an 11-5 contest at Pee Dee Academy to open the best-of-three set.
The series opener started off perfectly for the War Hawks, as leadoff hitter Weslin Jones crushed a double before scoring on a wild pitch to grab a 1-0 first-inning lead. Colleton Prep doubled the margin in the third thanks to a Jones walk and a pair of Golden Eagle errors, but the home team bounced back quickly in the bottom half, getting to the red-hot Haley Bootle with a four-spot sparked by a Lizzie McCaskill rally-starting triple to grab a 4-2 advantage.
Jones scored her third run on a passed ball in the fifth inning to cut the lead to one before Pee Dee tacked on three more ignited by a leadoff Allison Carter solo blast. The War Hawks kept the pressure on with a two-run sixth, as Jones continued her outstanding night with an RBI line-drive double before Taylor Tomedolskey connected on a single to trim the deficit to 7-5.
Unfortunately for CPA, the Golden Eagles had the answer again, putting up four in the bottom half to stretch the lead to six. A leadoff single gave some hope for Colleton Prep in the seventh, but a double-play grounder quickly extinguished the comeback efforts, giving Pee Dee Academy the Game 1 victory.
Jones was fantastic for the War Hawks from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-3 with an RBI while scoring a trio of runs. It was an unlucky day for the CPA defense, as the visitors committed 10 errors during the contest.
Colleton Prep (14-3) looks to keep its championship hopes alive Tuesday, hosting the Golden Eagles for Game 2 of the best-of-three series.
