May River boys soccer displayed a valiant effort at second-ranked James Island on Tuesday but fell to the Trojans 2-1 in extra time.
The Sharks had difficulties finding shots against a stout James Island defense in the first half, but Misael Garzon’s squad broke through in the 59th minute as sophomore Renty Kitty netted a goal to put his team up 1-0. It was a back and forth affair the rest of the way, and the Trojans found the equalizer off a corner kick with just two minutes left, sending the match to extra time.
After a defensive struggle for most of the overtime periods, James Island drew a penalty kick and cashed in to score the winning tally.
Goalkeeper Brayden Garcia was excellent for the Sharks, making four saves to keep May River right with the strong Trojan side.
“Both teams played an excellent game throughout the night with two different styles clashing,” Garzon said. “We came up short against a very good team, but our boys played an exceptional game.”
May River (6-3, 3-3) hosts rival Bluffton in the Bluffton Derby on Friday.
