Hilton Head Prep baseball locked up the SCISA Region 4 title on Monday, knocking off Colleton Prep at home 17-7.
The War Hawks got the scoring started with a Kyle Hooker three-run homer in the top of the first, but the Dolphins answered with a run in the bottom half before scoring three in the second to take a 4-3 lead.
Colleton Prep grabbed the advantage back with a four-spot in the third, but Hilton Head Prep then rattled off 12 unanswered runs including 10 in the fourth. The Dolphins ended it in the sixth on a Connor McDonnell single to score Luke Foley and clinch the region title.
“We definitely got off to a slow start today, but it was nice to see our squad battle back,” HHP head coach Chris Wells said. “It was extra special to win the region championship in front of our home crowd.”
McDonnell’s game-ending knock capped off a stellar 3-for-5 day with two RBIs. Reese Malon was 2-for-3 with two doubles while driving in a pair, and the always-reliable Luke Foley collected two hits and added three RBIs.
Steele Burd shined on the mound and at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a trio of runs driven in while throwing the final four innings and allowing no earned runs while racking up a remarkable nine strikeouts.
“Proud of how Steele came in relief today and pounded the strike zone and got us the quality innings we needed,” Wells said.
Hooker delivered an outstanding effort for the War Hawks, going 3-for-3 with a double and a three-run homer. Huiet Rowe was strong at the bottom of the order, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Hilton Head Prep (19-0, 10-0) travels to Cardinal Newman on Wednesday.
Colleton Prep (9-7, 7-2) closes out the region slate at home Tuesday against John Paul II.
