Thomas Heyward split an action-packed doubleheader with St. Andrew’s on Friday, falling to the Lions in the first contest 16-7 before exploding offensively in a 20-12 victory in the rematch.
St. Andrew’s found its groove early in game one, scoring 16 straight runs capped off by a seven-run fifth to take the commanding lead. The Rebels got going with seven of their own in the bottom half, but they couldn’t complete the unthinkable comeback in the five-inning game.
Thomas Heyward kept its newfound momentum going into the second contest, opening up a 4-1 first-inning lead thanks to a Jeremy Clemmer triple. The Lions struck back with seven in the top of the second to go up 8-4, but the Rebels got right back up, scoring four runs on RBI singles from Clemmer, Dylan Boyles, and Carter Zareva to tie it at 8.
St. Andrew’s took the lead again with four in the fourth, but the Rebels laid down the hammer with a 12-spot in the home half to snatch the high-scoring affair.
Boyles led the Rebels, going 6-for-7 in the series with four runs driven in while holding the Lions to no earned runs in two innings of relief on the mound. Ayden Lassiter was 6-for-8 in the series with two RBIs, and Zareva collected three hits while plating three in the game two win.
Peyton Bennett shut the door to finish off the victory, throwing a hitless final inning and picking up a pair of strikeouts.
Thomas Heyward (7-7, 5-4) travels to Patrick Henry on Tuesday.
