HSBSB: Rebels drop slugfest in season opener

Thomas Heyward Academy baseball lost its regular-season opener 16-11 to visiting Patrick Henry on Monday. 

Jeremy Clemmer went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and fellow senior Peyton Bennett was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the offense, but the Rebels couldn’t overcome a three-inning stretch in which they gave up 15 runs, including a six-run third.

Eighth-grader Deitrich Shuford had a big night in the leadoff spot in his varsity debut, going 1-for-2 with three walks, three runs, and three RBIs, and Dylan Boyles also had a solid night at the plate for the Rebels with two hits in four at bats.

The Rebels were hurt by eight walks and three errors. Zane Wilson was tagged with the loss. Quillan White gave the Rebels three solid innings to close out the game, allowing one run and two hits.

Thomas Heyward (0-1) will play Dorchester Academy in a non-region match up at home on Tuesday.
