SB: Offense erupts, freshmen combine on no-no in Sand Shark sweep

Bailey Wigness was hoping to see her squad ignite the offense Sunday, and the Sand Sharks delivered. USCB exploded for an eight-run third to support a combined no-hitter in a 12-0 run rule of Montreat, then the Sand Sharks came from behind for a 5-3 win in game two to sweep the home doubleheader.

After a scoreless first inning in the opener, USCB struck for four in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Jaci Coleman drove in a pair of runs and Francie Gaskin knocked in two more to open a 4-0 lead.

Then the eruption began. Assisted by seven walks or hit-by-pitches, the Sand Sharks posted eight runs in the third inning. Coleman singled to pick up her third RBI of the day, and Devon Weller sent a drive to center field to plate a pair.

In her first USCB start, Sierra Bilinski threw four scoreless innings along with three strikeouts, and fellow freshman Libby Carey finished off a no-hitter in the fifth to run-rule the Cavaliers.

Montreat found the scoreboard first in game two, but the Sand Sharks evened the contest in the bottom of the second. With runners on the corners, Amber Locasto stole second, luring the throw while Zinia Hampleton scored from third to knot the game at 1.

The Cavaliers took the lead right back, going up 3-1 in the third with RBI hits from Sarah Edge and Lexie Meyners. USCB trimmed the deficit in half in the fourth, as Locasto, Leah Stegall, and Alyssa Smith strung together three straight singles to start the inning before Locasto scored on a fielder’s choice.

Stegall came up clutch with two outs in the fifth, dropping a single in center field to score Locasto and tie the game at 3. The Sand Sharks seized the lead in the sixth with a little small ball, as a pair of bunt singles produced the go-ahead run. Gaskin laid down a beauty to send Rachel Frankhouser across before a Hampleton sacrifice fly doubled the advantage.

Maria Molloseau entered the contest in the sixth and tossed a pair of perfect innings to earn her second win of the season.

Coleman delivered an impressive 4-for-5 afternoon with three RBI, and Locasto was a perfect 3-for-3 while scoring a trio of runs.

USCB (4-0) hosts a round-robin tournament Friday and Saturday.
