Nic Shuford’s juggernaut has done it again. The Thomas Heyward Rebels dominated from the start with an explosive ground game and swarming defense, cruising to a 46-14 victory over Lee Academy on Saturday night at Charleston Southern to win their third consecutive SCISA 1A state title.
Senior JR Patterson led the onslaught behind a dominant offensive line with 111 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Anthony Fripp tallied 85 yards, including a long gashing run to kickstart the night. Bruzza Pusha shined at receiver, catching four passes for 66 yards and adding a 16-yard scamper to open the scoring. Peyton Bennett capped off an outstanding season at quarterback, throwing for 194 yards while adding a touchdown sneak on the ground.
The defense stymied the Cavaliers from the opening snap and would have notched a second-half shutout if not for a late score. Ridgeland-Hardeeville transfer Brandon Howard provided a huge lift this season and made plays all over the field Saturday night, from defending in pass coverage to rushing quarterback Keaton Price. Pusha and Jeremy Clemmer delivered at linebacker and shut down a potent Price-led attack. After Lee Academy found an offensive spark with a trick play score, the Rebels dug in with an interception and fourth-down stuff to take full control.
