Thomas Heyward opened its SCISA Class 1A state title defense with a dominant 70-8 win over visiting Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach on Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
The Rebels put up 48 points in the first quarter and rolled to their 10th consecutive victory to begin their quest for a third straight state title.
THA scored on its first three offensive plays — a 65-yard bomb from Peyton Bennett to Bruzza Pusha and long TD runs from Anthony Fripp and JR Patterson — and Pusha added a punt return touchdown as the Rebels amassed a 32-0 lead just seven minutes into the game.
Patterson added another TD run on the Rebels’ next drive, and Fripp tacked on his second TD of the first quarter to make it 48-0. The defense added to the lead on the first play of the second quarter, as Brandon Howard stripped the ball and took it to the end zone for a 56-0 advantage.
Branden Davis and Dietrich Shuford each added a touchdown run to help the Rebels finish off the dominant victory.
Fripp (five carries, 107 yards), Patterson (five carries, 103 yards), and Shuford (six carries, 112 yards) each went over 100 yards rushing in limited action as the clock ran in the second half.
The Rebels (10-1) will host Dillon Christian in the semifinals next Friday.
