John Paul II’s volleyball team used a big night at the service line to squeak out a thrilling five-set win over Thomas Heyward on Thursday.
The Rebels got off to a hot start, winning the first set before the Golden Warriors rallied to win the next two. THA was able to force a fifth set, but JPII prevailed 3-2 (17-25, 25-18, 25-21, 16-25, 15-13).

With the score sitting at 14-13 in the last set, eight-grader Camryn Michael delivered the last of her team-high seven aces to clinch the victory for the Golden Warriors. Michael’s addition to the varsity team this year displayed her strength at the serving line, as she recorded seven of JPII’s 18 aces. Seniors Gin White and Bella Termini also served four aces apiece.
Junior Natalie King led the Rebels, compiling 12 kills and a block, and Keleigh Bowers returned from an injury to dish out 19 digs along with three kills and six aces. Senior setters Abby Bennett and Amelia Bonds combined for 23 assists and 36 digs.
The Golden Warriors are playing Hilton Head Prep on Monday, while the Rebels will be appearing in the Baron Bash at Wilson Hall starting on Saturday.
