Youth Baseball Roundup: Two Waves teams take home hardware

The Bluffton Waves 9U Blue squad claimed a runner-up finish Saturday at the USSSA Triple Play Classic in North Charleston.

Coach Nick Carpenter’s squad went 2-1 on the weekend, beating eventual champion Venom Stars in pool play before dropping the rematch in the championship game.

The Waves opened with a 10-8 victory over Venom Stars, as Nathan Fulton went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to pace the offense, while Declan Mitchell drove in two runs, Jaxson LeBaron had two hits and an RBI, and Nicholas Carpenter added two hits.

They kept it going with a 4-1 win over the East Coast Bombers, as Mitchell struck out eight and allowed three hits over 3 1/3 innings and Colt Harper recorded the final two outs for the save. Trevor Wolfe was 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the offense.

The Waves ran out of steam in the title game, falling behind early and losing 16-4 to Venom Stars. Fulton provided the highlight of the game for Bluffton with a two-run home run.

Waves 10U wins silver bracket

The Bluffton Waves 10U baseball team captured its third consecutive tournament title this weekend, winning the Silver Bracket championship at the Top Gun USA Wood Bat Summer World Series.

The Waves, coached by Jason Cotter, bounced back from two one-run losses to open the tournament to win four straight en route to the Silver Bracket title.

After suffering a pair of 6-5 losses in pool play, the Waves turned things around with a 10-5 win over the Carolina Copperheads, as Zack Szypczak earned the win on the mound, Mason Dobbs was 2-for-2 with two triples and two RBIs, Ellis Rose and Chase Cotter added two hits apiece, and Brandon Hunter had two RBIs.

The Waves kept rolling with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Garnet & Black Dustin, as Derek Blesie and Chase Cotter each pitched three innings to combine for eight strikeouts in a four-hitter and Hunter added another RBI. It looked like that would be enough to get the Waves into the Gold Bracket, but they just missed the cut for the top division.

Blesie picked up another win on the mound in Sunday’s semifinal, allowing four runs over three innings before Kallan Gordon pitched two scoreless frames to clinch an 8-4 win over the Copperheads. Blesie added two hits, including an RBI triple, at the top of the order, and Rose had two hits and an RBI.

The Waves finished off the weekend with a 14-4 rout of Garnet & Black, putting up multiple runs in each inning in support of Szypczak, who allowed two earned runs over 3 2/3 innings before handing it over to Gordon to record the final out. Hunter was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs to lead the offensive outburst, while Blesie, Gordon, and Layton Tillotson each added two hits and Dobbs drove in two runs.
