GOLF: Burnett tops field, Hawkins loses playoff at Jimmy Self Invitational

Camila Burnett of Bluffton shot 3-over-par 219 over 54 holes to claim a four-shot victory in the girls division of the S.C. Junior Golf Association’s 25th annual Jimmy Self Invitational over the weekend at Palmetto Dunes.

Burnett carded rounds of 73, 72, and 74 on Palmetto Dunes’ Arthur Hills Course, claiming a four-shot victory over Rock Hill’s Buggy Reinke. Fellow Blufftonians Sydney Bowes (236) and Kylie Bowes (239) finished sixth and seventh.

It was nearly a sweep for local golfers, as Hilton Head Island’s Nolan Hawkins fired a final round of 4-under 68 on Sunday to charge to the lead before losing a playoff to Major Lenning of Simpsonville. Lenning shot 2-under on the back nine to match Hawkins at even-par 216 and force extra holes, then made a routine par on the par-5 18th to win on the first playoff hole.

Bluffton’s Andrew Swanson (218) finished third, while Beaufort’s Jerry Bruns (221) tied for fifth and Hilton Head’s Max Green (224) tied for ninth.

The Jimmy Self Invitational is considered one of the SCJGA’s major events of the season.
