John Paul II’s girls opened their season with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Northwood Academy on Friday.
The Golden Warriors weren’t in top form after being limited in practice due to inclement weather, but their defense was able to clamp down on the Chargers. Goalkeeper Abby Quinty made seven saves, including a stop of a Northwood penalty in the final seconds of the match.
Katie Leigh Floyd scored the only goal of the afternoon after a great series of passes from Alondra Hurtado and Gin White.
Quinty made sure the goal held up, stopping the Chargers’ penalty and pouncing on the rebound to seal the win.
“With no real practices to speak of, the team played very well,” JPII coach Brian Quinty said. “We look forward to a great season with an accomplished squad, now holding a strong bench.”
JPII (1-0) hosts Beaufort Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
