HSBBB: Dolphins’ title defense ends in heartbreak

Hilton Head Prep’s boys saw their dreams of a second consecutive state title end in heartbreaking fashion Monday, as the Dolphins lost 65-58 in overtime to Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach in the second round of the SCISA 2A state tournament at the Sumter Civic Center.

Tyrone Calloway came back from an early injury to score 21 points to lead the Dolphins, while Ryan Mikell scored 12 points off the bench and fellow reserve Kane Eanes added 10.

The Dolphins thought they had won it at the end of regulation when Stone McDonald hit a half-court shot, but the basket was waved off because HHP was granted a timeout before the shot.

That sent the game to overtime, and the Saints outscored the Dolphins 7-0 in the extra period.

The Dolphins finished the season with a 21-7 record.
