HSGBB: Sharks make quick work of Panthers in 1st round

May River’s girls breezed into the second round of the Class 3A playoffs with a 70-22 home win over Pelion on Monday.

Gracyn Drury, Jordan Bigham, and Chynna Sneed each scored 11 points to lead the way for the Sharks, who locked down on defense to race out to a 33-7 halftime lead and cruised from there.

“We rely on our defense, and when we get steals and deflections, those lead to easy transition baskets,” May River senior Olivia Peluso said.

The big halftime lead also allowed the Sharks to sub liberally and get everyone involved — 10 different players scored for May River, including eight points each from Lindsey Olds and Addison Black, six from Emma Peluso, and five from Olivia Peluso.

“Our girls came out strong,” May River coach Jermaine Bigham said. “It was good to have the opportunity to play everyone. It’s very rewarding when you get everybody a chance to get on the floor and play.”

It also allowed the Sharks to rest their legs for what figures to be a much tougher test in Thursday’s second round. The 10th-ranked Sharks will host No. 6 Dillon.

“It’s always a good feeling to get the first win in the playoffs,” Olivia Peluso said. “We still have a long way to go.”
