Two key members of Thomas Heyward Academy’s state championship football team finalized their college plans Wednesday.
Standout offensive lineman Dalton Hayes signed with The Citadel, and defensive standout Jarius Gordon signed with Erskine College in a ceremony at the school.
“These two programs just picked up some outstanding scholar-athletes,” THA football coach and athletics director Nic Shuford said.
Hayes played right tackle for a dominant offensive line that paved the way for an average of 295.9 rushing yards per game for the back-to-back SCISA 1A champion Rebels. He also was a frequent contributor on defense, compiling 26 tackles on the season, including four in the state championship game. He also recovered a fumble in the 30-6 win over Bethesda Academy.
Gordon had a monster senior season as one of THA’s top pass rushers. He racked up 97 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss, as well as eight sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. He also had a huge performance in the state title game, collecting eight tackles (three for loss) and a sack.
