CFL Grey Cup-winning coach John Gregory to speak at next ACL meeting

A longtime collegiate and professional football coach is the featured speaker for the January meeting of the Athletic Club of the Lowcountry.

Retired Canadian Football League and Arena Football League coach John Gregory will headline the club’s Jan. 13 meeting at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Bluffton. The meeting will be called to order at 6:30 p.m. — an early start ahead of that night’s national championship college football game. Refreshments will be served starting at 6 p.m., allowing members and guests an opportunity to socialize.

Gregory has a long and distinguished coaching record that includes nine seasons in the CFL and a Grey Cup title with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1989. Gregory then spent 17 seasons coaching the AFL and af2 indoor leagues, compiling a 117-90 record. He took the Iowa Barnstormers to the Arena Bowl in 1996 and 1997 but came up short in each title bid. Gregory was named AFL Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996.

In addition to his coaching experience, Gregory has served as a collegiate athletics director and as the Barnstormers’ GM for a three-year stint.

Members of the Athletic Club of the Lowcountry and guests are welcome to attend. Guests should call Judy Barry at 843-705-5223 to register their intention to attend.

The Athletic Club of the Lowcountry meets the second Monday of each month with the exception of June, July, August, and December. New members and visitors are always welcome.
