Youth Baseball: Pitching Powers Bluffton National, Hilton Head In Ozone Openers

Bluffton National and Hilton Head won the opening games of the Dixie Youth Baseball District 8 Ozone (11-12) All-Star Tournament on Friday at Burton Wells Park in Beaufort.

Bluffton National dominated Colleton County 8-1 in its opener behind a strong pitching performance from Walker Mikkelson, who allowed only one unearned run and two hits in a six-inning complete game. Fergus Varley was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Bluffton National at the plate.

Hilton Head defeated host Beaufort 5-1 and will face Bluffton National at noon Saturday. Colleton County and Beaufort will square off in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The winner of the double-elimination tournament will earn a berth in the state tournament next month in Bluffton. Bluffton American already has a host bid to the state tournament.
