HS Baseball: HHP Can’t Finish Off CPA

Hilton Head Prep couldn’t close out its first-round series in the SCISA 2A playoffs Tuesday, falling 11-10 at Colleton Prep to force a deciding third game.

After digging an early 6-0 hole, the Dolphins rallied for three runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 9-8 lead, but they couldn’t hang on. Colleton Prep tied it in the fifth, and after HHP regained the lead with a run in the sixth, the War Hawks scored two in the bottom of the inning and shut down the Dolphins in the seventh to stay alive.

“We had our chances to pull the upset on the road and just didn’t quite pull it off,” HHP coach Chris Wells said. “Now we’ve got to see if we can win and advance on Thursday in front of our home crowd.”

Gage Hurlbut was 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs, and two RBIs to lead HHP at the plate. Tommy Stauffer was 2-for-4 with two runs, Tristan Bonomo had a double and four RBIs, and Luke Foley was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.

Trevor Weldon was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing two unearned runs over 1 2/3 innings of relief.

The Dolphins (15-5) will host the rubber game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
