Louie Smith’s infield single brought home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Thomas Heyward Academy a 3-2 home win over John Paul II in a key region matchup Tuesday.
Jeremy Clemmer led off the seventh with a double, and Chipper Hammond followed with an infield single. A JPII error on a sacrifice bunt attempt brought in the tying run, and Smith’s one-out infield single scored Fulton Wade with the winning run.
Clemmer also earned the win with two perfect innings of relief after Smith struck out 12 and allowed two runs over five frames. Hayden Jennings took the loss in relief.
Bryce Tillotson had two hits for the Rebels, while Ray Johnson had two hits and Peter Hughes added an RBI double for the Golden Warriors.
THA (6-7, 4-2) hosts Beaufort High at 6 p.m. Friday. JPII (7-5, 3-3) travels to Whale Branch on Wednesday.
