John Paul II’s Ray Johnson set a school record with 13 strikeouts, and the Golden Warriors scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Thomas Heyward on Tuesday.
Adrian Skipper brought home Peter Hughes with the winning run and earned the win in relief of Johnson, who limited the Rebels to two unearned runs and three hits over 6 1/3 innings. Skipper struck out five and gave up one hit and two walks in 2 2/3 innings. Hayden Jennings also had an RBI for JPII.
Louie Smith matched Johnson’s 13 strikeouts and gave up two unearned runs and one hit over 5 2/3 innings. Bryce Tillotson took the loss, allowing one unearned run and one hit with two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings in relief, and he went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
JPII (6-4, 2-2) travels to Ridgeland-Hardeeville on Wednesday. The Rebels (4-6, 2-2) travel to Dorchester Academy on Thursday.
